13 Reasons Your Business Should be on Instagram

1. The numbers, the numbers

Four hundred million numbers, to be more specific. Over half of the 400 million active users on Instagram check their accounts daily. With that many potential customers out there, isn't it time you put yourself out there?

2. Customers are looking for you

According to the Iconosquare study, 70% of Instagramers have already looked for a brand on Instagram (as opposed to a friend, or celebrity). Instagram users love to see, follow and interact with the brands they're interested in.

3. Portfolio on the go

Have you ever quickly needed to show someone what you're up to, where your business is at, what creative work you've been involved in? With an Instagram account, you can showcase your work from the palm of your hand.

4. Connecting you globally (and locally)

Instagram has no geographical boundaries. American shoe designers are chatting with Brazilian customers, Russian artists are receiving orders from Pilipino buyers. In a more local context, like minded entrepreneurs can connect over similar work and exchange ideas. The world is wide open for business, and Instagram can connect you.

5. It's free!

Unlike many other business tools there is no cost to setting up an Instagram account.

6. Visual thinking

So often we can get stuck in thinking about our business from our own perspective: things to do, people to meet, goals to accomplish. Because Instagram is a visual platform, it forces you to ask the question 'How do I want my business/product/service to be perceived?' In this way it stretches us to think about our customers, and to ensure that a first time encounter with a potential client is really communicating our values.

7. It's super creative

Instagram is a brilliantly creative outlet. Taking the shot, editing your images, and curating your feed can be a break from routine and loads of fun.

8. Communities that connect

Many business overlook Instagram as a valuable tool because all they see is an audience made up primarily of selfie-taking teenagers, coffee drinking hipsters, and puppy enthusiasts. Although there is a lot of that (no there really is), there is also a community of people who are interested in the same things that make you who you are, and that make your business what it is. There are block print enthusiasts, yoga devotees, travel writers, animal conservationists, homeschoolers, infopreneurs, vintage car lovers, sports coaches and more all looking to connect with like minded others. These communities can become a support network, a place to grow friendships, and a potential customer base.

9. Daily inspiration

There are a lot of people out there doing the most spectacular things. Although we have access to all of this stuff on the web, inspiration on Instagram comes in bite sized visuals, without the rabbit hole effect of a million clickable links. I've found daredevil high wire walkers overcoming their fears (like @handsomerobison), sufferers of mental illness finding healing through online community (like @joshjohnson), brilliant artisans building successful businesses doing something they love (like @arielealasko) all through Instagram, and they have inspired me.

10. Cross-sharing for the win!

Its possible to share straight from Instagram to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and a host of other platforms. I really like how this can save a lot of time.

11. Only a few seconds

Unlike a podcast, webinar, video or even a blog post, posting to Instagram is instant. In a matter of seconds you've shared some info, touched base with your customers, put something out there that is building your business.

12. Build that brand loyalty

I've heard it said that people need at least three exposures to your brand before they register that you even exist. Posting to your Instagram account often keeps your brand uppermost in your followers' minds. More and more businesses are being found online through platforms like Instagram, which prompt customers to make in-store visits.

13. Record your journey

Your Instagram feed records the journey you've been on. As it builds up over months and years, you'll be able to look back and see a visual reminder of where you've come from, how your business has grown and be able to celebrate the milestones along the way.
