Across the Universe
Bernhard and Colleen contacted me after they saw a site I had worked on with The Millers (the couple who’ve taken off on a tandem cycling adventure across Europe). Bernhard and Colleen have been rethinking their current work model and wanted to put together a website that reflected this shift. For many clients the most challenging part of the process is defining who you are, what your services entail, who your target audience is, and how you want all of that all presented online. There’s a lot of thinking, writing, ideating, rethinking, editing and collaboration involved in the process.
I started this Squarespace site design with the 'Eamon' template, using a vertically stacked index page to showcase their various offerings. What I like about this template is its parallax scrolling feature with customizable text overlays. I set up a drop-down menu on the ‘Ministry’ page, simple ‘About’, ‘Contact’ and ‘Donate’ pages, and a fully functioning ‘Blog’ - where I look forward to reading more of their writing. Bernhard also has a podcast which I created a custom icon for, and I also set them up with a Facebook Page, Mailchimp Account and a Paypal Integration to handle any donations that come their way.
Despite the challenges of working across a 10 hour time difference with them in New Zealand, me in South Africa, and quite a few sleepy emails back and forth between us, it's always an honour to work so closely with people on a project close to their hearts.
Selecting and curating site images is one of my favourite parts of the process of building a site. For this project, the image of the telescope with an open sky and vintage metallic tones really appealed to me as symbolic of the 'vision' (excuse the pun) of the organisation. Bernhard and Colleen's idea is centred around 'seeing the future', and I was thrilled to find this beautiful photo fitted so well. Sometimes it feels like there's a single image that pulls everything together - this one definitely did the job.

The logo was developed by Bianca Bouverie, and features a stylised 'E' and 'N' in an interlocking pattern and draws on a traditional, classic logo layout.
Go and have a look for yourself.
I like to share the step by step process for each website I build. You can find more of these blog posts over here...
