Instagram isn't only about putting your images out there for others; it can also be a source of great inspiration. The South African design scene is certainly an exciting space to watch at the moment, so when I came across @local_za_design, an Instagram account dedicated to South African design, I thought it would be worth finding out a bit more about the person and the story behind the account.
Hello Ida, perhaps you could introduce yourself in a few sentences...
My name is Idalina Silva, I am from Johannesburg and I am currently finishing my third year in Interior Design at Greenside Design Center.
You run an Instagram feature account focused on South African design. What prompted you to start this?
I have always had a growing interest in design and I follow several design accounts on Instagram but I realised there were not many design accounts dedicated purely to South African design. The reason I started the page is because I am using it as a form of education. I am constantly being inspired by actively looking for design. This will also help me have a better idea of what companies are out there when I work in the industry.
How do you find content to populate your Instagram feed?
I have created a hashtag that I look through everyday for content. It is #LocalZaDesign. I also follow several South African designers and artists and if I see anything that sparks my interest I'll post it.
How would you describe your particular design aesthetic?
As a student, I would say that I dont have a set design aesthetic but I do favor contemporary design. I love clean lines and a minimalistic look and feel.
What has the response to the account been so far?
The response has been incredibly positive. I have grown to almost 4000 followers in 5 months. This is what @design_by_studiomic had to say about the account...
What have you learned from running this account?
I have learned that running an instagram account is no walk in the park. You have to constantly stay relevant and post images that people want to see.
What are your aspirations for @local_za_design?
I hope that this account keeps growing and South Africans start to realise what incredible talent we have in this county.
I'd love to hear your thoughts about the South African design scene...
The South African design scene is definitely growing, people in South Africa are coming to realise the value in good design. The emerging increase of the middle class market is allowing our industry to grow. But there are several challenges that need to be overcome, one that sticks out for me is the little support from government with regards to start-ups and creating facilities for designers to build up capital.
Who are some of your all time favourite South African designers to follow, and why?
I have two favourite designers. @mairakoutsoudakis from Life, Interiors, Architecture and Strategic Design as well as Megan Hesse and Andrea Kleinloog from @anatomydesign. I think these women are all very inspirational and have a specific design ethos that I admire.
What are some helpful hashtags for South African design-related accounts?
#localzadesign #Southafricandesign and #lovelocalza
What would you like to say to South Africans in the design world using Instagram?
I WOULD TELL THEM TO BE ORIGINAL, ALWAYS TRY TO BE INNOVATIVE AND STAY RELEVANT.
Thanks so much, Ida, for taking the time to answer these questions. You can follow her feature account at @local_za_design, and don't forget to use the tag #localzadesign to be featured there.
