To celebrate what is known to most South Africans as 'Braai Day', @IgersGrahamstown and the local Makana Municipality decided to collaborate on a community iphoneography exhibition based around the theme of Heritage Day. Having gained some valuable experience from our #ourlovegrahamstown exhibition, Makana Tourism took care of the exhibition venue, printing, opening event and prizes, while @igersgrahamstown focused on mobilising local instagrammers, communication, instawalks and the curation of the exhibition. We launched the project via the @igersgrahamstown Instagram and Facebook accounts and got to work setting up our timeline, deciding on hashtags, planning instawalks as well as organising the opening event. Working together with some of our more seasoned igers, we decided to focus on four themes which we announced on a weekly basis over four weeks. These were:
- "Postcard Perfect": Looking for the perfect 16x9 format postcard
- "Small Town Stories": Images that contain a story
- "Looking Up/Looking Down": Seeing Grahamstown from a different angle
- "Out and About": Images beyond town centre.
These weekly challenges became the thematic inspiration for the photographers, whose entries were submitted via the #thisismymakana hashtag. We ran weekly features, highlighting some of the best entries within each category. The winners, who were selected by a panel of judges, were announced on the evening of the exhibition. Makana Tourism, in partnership with local businesses, provided a range of cash and other prizes for first, second and third place.
